zooooooooooo

Here are some watercolor paintings I did at the LA Zoo with Deborah Ross and some friends this last Saturday.  She's awesome and super nice and I wish the trip could have been longer since we only got to paint a couple animals.  But at least we went to see the giraffes which were my favorite.

I need to practice painting more.  I'll have to find time for that in my increasingly behind schedule semester.

Some old stuff

Old Character designs I found on my hard drive, animation test I did during winterbreak, and photoshop painting practice.

flying donut?

one of many possibly bad ideas for a film.  I should sketch all my dumb ideas and upload them.

can't come up with a legit story that I'd like to work on for a whole semester just yet.  But it'll happen

Airplanes go whoosh

A quick doodle I did on the plane flying back to CalArts.  Stewardesses were staring over my shoulder and were fascinated with my tablet.  Made things pretty uncomfortable.  So I stopped.  Added a bit more when I got back.

Red Cat Green Backpack

A small still done for Fran Krause's Digital Methods class.

Everyone had to make a still/layout of a film involving a red cat and green backpack.  And we'll all animate it into 1 film next semester.  Can't wait. I actually designed the layout and characters into something that I think would be fun to animate.  Originally I had a totally different layout that was more of a painting and would have in my opinion annoying and not fun to animate.

Walk Cycle part deux

Here's my second walk cycle.  This time with arms.

It's supposed to be a man in a bunny costume but at a certain point I just had to leave it as is without cleanup because I've got so much more work that needs to get done.  Hopefully it's ok If it bugs me too much I'll just clean it up and draw in the final lines for the ears.  The rabbit ears were driving me crazy because I had 2 versions.  One where the ears didn't move as much and this one where they acted more like waving flags.  The waving flag ears bugged the hell out of me.  Maybe Scott can fix them.

I have a duck

A walk cycle without arms as demanded by Scott Wright.  I made a duck.

Might tweak it later once I get character design out of the way.  And maybe give him a business hat.

Haven't had time to scan or upload anything else.  Will soon.

Fran Krause

Just a quick flash animation I did in digital methods.  First time using Flash and I gotta admit it was pretty fun.  I animated Fran Krause punching out a cowboy.

Quick disclaimer, I wasn't really trying to do things right so don't bash me for the animation flaws.  It was just a test lol.

Apparently... I'm known for my frown

Color and Design work!
Self portraits.

It was fun to paint.  Which was probably why I did that more than anything else.  One of the few times where I had the opportunity to try painting so I jumped on it.

I really wish I had more time to teach myself painting because it really feels like I'd have a lot of fun doing this.  Maybe I'll try and take a class in the summer or something.

So here it is.  Me drawing Me.

On a side note, I actually had a hard time keeping a straight face while doing these... too serious for me.

But as the title says... everyone in class agreed I have a default frown face.  I smile a lot, honest to God!  But apparently people only remember me when i frown lol.  I'm gonna need to work on that... maybe get better PR

I'll post some animations tests soon.  It's gonna take a bit because apparently nobody does it in pencil and paper anymore

Calvin and Hobbes!

Here's some more character design. :)
This week's assignment was to design some characters based off Calvin and Hobbes.

People say I ended up just drawing myself as a little kid.
Not as many drawings this week but it was still fun.  Funny how the classes I struggle with seem to be the only ones that I post about here. *cough*characterdesign*cough*

I have no clever title

This week's Character Design class assignment.  Create characters in a Tim Burton-ish style.

I don't think Character Design is my calling haha

BIRD

Last week's character design HW. Design characters that are kind of like ostriches and emus but not really since they're cartoons and realistic emus are kind of boring.

shhtuff.

yep... just a bunch of stuff from life drawing.  I gotta say I'm loving the models here.

life drawing here is nuts.  The models are amazing and can pull off ridiculous poses that others I've had in Illinois could never do.  And they've got costumes.  We've usually got about 5-10 tops to capture the figure and while doing it we have to try and incorporate layout design, character design, and story.  Honestly, it's almost too much for my tiny self taught head to absorb.

But here they are.  I believe these are a couple of the better ones from the past 3 sessions.  The quality may be a bit low and the images may be a bit distorted and curved because of how I took the pictures.  Sorry.

crayons

a couple from the structural/anatomy part of class.

I got a bit bored.  So I gave the lady an AK

Also, check out Toniko's blog if you haven't already.  He's a friend of mine who's been to Sheridan as well and he's just uploaded a massive amount of work from class as well.  He's got a very distinct style and he talks about the difference between Sheridan and CalArts in terms of figure drawing.  It's an interesting point of view he's got that isn't very common I'd imagine and his stuff is most definitely worth taking a look at.  I know I always feel like an amateur when I see his stuff during drawing breaks.

He's awesome for sure.  Toniko's Blog

Treeeeeees

Pretty much all my Color and Design projects have been trees.  I can just picture my final semester portfolio.  And the teacher's face when she realizes she's looking at perhaps dozens upon dozens of trees.

:/

yes, so it's been a month or so at CalArts now! And all I gotta say is that there's a disgusting amount of talent here.

Lots of work and lots of procrastinating makes a very bad combo I must admit.

anyways, not having a laptop makes going online quite difficult. Which might actually be a good thing since I'd probably be even worse off if I had easy access to the internet. I've decided to try and post somewhat regularly here. Even if I don't like my work. Maybe showing it more will make me care about my assignments more haha. Sounds like a really dumb thing since people would apparently kill to be where I am but it's hard to care about some of these intro assignments.

but yesh, don't expect glorious art from me. Go to the other CA students haha. They're amazing. Makes me wonder how I'm here.

but enough self wallowing. Be back soon. I'll upload some stuff from last week or something.

Here to fill up some space is a little doodle of my CG Animation teacher Lee Gramling :)
